As Gov. Phil Murphy lifted the coronavirus stay-at-home order, it allowed churches, synagogues, mosques and other houses of worship to hold limited indoor services. But one Williamstown church continued with a more unconventional way to hold mass.
Services at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church looked more like a drive-in movie theater than the traditional Sunday gathering as cars parked in designated spots on the lawn with the radio tuned into the channel the mass was broadcasted on.
Holy Communion was held using a more than 4-foot-long hand-crafted stick designed by a congregation member. The pastor or deacon would use the stick to pass the elements to the driver, allowing them to keep safe distance. Mini red Solo cups were also used as part of the Eucharist.
